Kimberley Locke - Fall (Almighty Club Mix)

June 14, 2008 | 3:02 pm

It’s your lucky day… I’m sharing not just one Earworm, but two! The single from Kimberly Locke “Fall” was actually released back in 2007 from her album “Based On A True Story“. I have to say, when visited a few Web sites to gather up the history of this song, I was a little disappointed. While I’m really stuck on this Almighty Club Mix version, the original was somewhat “ho-hum”. Perhaps I’m biased in my dance anthem music snobbery, but even on her American Idol visit to sing this song is was boring. Digging a bit more, come to find out there’s a country version of this song by Clay Walker as well (if you feel compelled to feel sick to your stomach, view the video on YouTube).

The original, non-remix version of this song not-withstanding, Kimberly has really had a few songs in her arsenal that I’ve been impressed with. 8th World Wonder & Change can definitely be listened to several times… So it seems (at least for now) “Fall” is going to be a great follow up… (As long as you stick to the dance remixes!)

Now it’s time for you to decide…

Idols Live - Or - How To Be A Mediocre Performer

August 11, 2007 | 10:19 pm

Idols Live Logo

American Idols Live “performed” this last Thursday at Scott Trade Center Auditorium. C and I were treated with tickets in one of the Club rooms so obviously I had to say yes. I’ve been a huge follower since my first obsession with Kelly Clarkson (or just the nice to look at Katharine McPhee):

Clarkson McPhee

Well - I knew neither of them were going to be there but there was going to be free hot dogs, chicken fingers and nachos!

While I had some hopes of a good time, my expectations of something more than a glorified chorus line or group karaoke like the TV show were quickly dashed as soon as the group came on stage. I now know exactly what it takes to be able to sell tickets to families at $65 a piece…

  1. A singer must point to the audience at all times (must be an old television camera trick)
  2. When singing male/female duets, the couple can only pretend to like one another, and then move away from one another like somebody just caught them making out as “just friends”
  3. A singer should left their legs up one at a time as an excuse for “dancing” or “choreography”
  4. Shouting “Hey Saint Louis” or which ever town you’re performing in as a last ditch effort to excite the crowd can only be used a few times in a single show.
  5. Running up and down stairs does not qualify as choreography (neither does just walking around)
  6. Equally - strobe lights and disco balls don’t make up much in the way as lighting effects.
  7. If you’re near the audience and your fans are lining up to get a glimpse of you - when you’re done pointing around (see #1 above) - reach out and try to touch your fans. Don’t shake hands - just touch… or slap - or high five.
  8. Most of the group can’t sing very well to begin with - but a horrific mix in a live venue sure doesn’t help much either!
  9. If you’re going to sing covers all night - you could at least make them more original… That is unless you’re Blake and then you’re just going to screw it up with your beat-box fads and bad A cappella.
  10. Covers of Whitney Houston songs usually never do a singer justice - however LaKisha Jones did a really good job with “I Will Always Love You” - the only stand out (by far) song sung all night.
  11. And lastly - Sanjaya Malakar. No more to say about that…

So all in all - an okay night. I can say I’ve hit an Idols show in person now - but I’ll probably never go again… (Unless they’re Club level tickets!) If those tickets weren’t free - I would have thought that the event promoters were out to steal our money! They even had a 30 minute intermission! So - until next season…

American Idol - One-Legged Man & The 100 Meter Sprint

January 18, 2007 | 11:33 pm

I’m actually a few days behind on watching the new season of American Idol, but because I’ve been a TiVo junkie for longer than I can remember - I had the privilege and honor of blooka blooking through the ramblings of the first 4 hours in about 30 minutes. Now those of you that know me, know that I’m an Idol fanatic. Not so much of the first parts of the season… I’d rather see when the contestants get to Hollywood and the show really starts. However, I snagged a brilliant moment on the second day of Seattle when a terrible, terrible contestant named “Red” wanted Simon Cowell to offer him singing lessons… It went a little something like this:

American Idol - Red

Red: If you think you’re so ******* damn hot, step up and coach me!

American Idol - Simon

Simon: I wouldn’t. It would be like coaching a one-legged man to win the 100 meter sprint. I mean, I may be a great coach but if you haven’t got it, you haven’t got it.

Red: Don’t sing about it, be about it. Don’t sing it, bring it. A’right?

Simon: I’m not being rude…

While I almost agree with the fun loving dribble of what drops out of Simon’s mouth from a musical background (yes - 99.9% of the people on that show CAN’T sing!!!) - that line about the one-legged man just made me chuckle. It sums up everything about the pissed off contestants on that show that say they’ve all got talent and Idol has it all wrong… Amazing… Denial. Sad, sad confused people.

I’m still chuckling…
