Save Your Pennies & Nickels

December 14, 2006 | 4:15 pm

Just read an interesting article this afternoon about the requests to the US Mint about the legality of melting pennies and nickels down for their raw materials. So you better not get caught:

The new regulations prohibit the melting of 1-cent and 5-cent coins, with a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for people convicted of violating the rule.

Bummer. Since switching to using my credit card a few years ago for practically everything… I’ve not had the familiar feeling of jingling change in my pocket. (I do have some in my drawer at work in case I get the need for a Diet Pepsi out of the vending machine… but that’s about it!)

But in case you’re feeling a bit feisty:

A nickel is 25 percent nickel and 75 percent copper. The metal in one coin costs 6.99 cents for each 5-cent coin. When the Mint’s cost of producing the coins is added, the total cost for each nickel is 8.34 cents.

Modern pennies have 2.5 percent copper content with zinc making up the rest of the coin. The current copper and zinc in a penny are worth 1.12 cents. The cost of production drives the cost of each penny up to 1.73 cents.

Pennies made before 1982, which are still in circulation, would be even more lucrative to melt down because they contain 95 percent copper and only 5 percent zinc. The metal value in those coins is 2.13 cents per coin, Mint officials said.

Heart Attack Grill - Triple Bypass Burger

December 09, 2006 | 9:46 am

So this place called the Heart Attack Grill comes out with some burgers a few months ago that are essential the “Greatest Burger Ever Made” (well - I made that up…). The waitresses dress like nurses (skimpy in that manner - like girls on Halloween!). And now real nurses are complaining about their outfits. You think they’d complain about the burgers!

The waitresses wear skimpy, cleavage-baring outfits, high heels and thigh-high stockings — a male fantasy that some nursing organizations say is an insult to the profession.

Well, the point of this randomness of a post isn’t about who’s complaining about death, burgers and short nursing outfits, it’s about this picture:

Heart Attack Grill - Triple Bypass Burger

Man… I WANT ONE! Doesn’t that look good? OMG - oooohhh yeah… Figures that I’m a burger guy…

“They definitely look at us, but they’re guys,” Courtney Chapman said. “If our butts are coming out the bottom of our skirts, and our boobs are coming out the top of our shirts, we’re kind of asking for it.”

Yeah… I guess I could like that too… But it’s still about the burger!

Heidi Klum - Wonderland

December 08, 2006 | 2:25 pm

Heidi Klum - Wonderland - Coverart 2

After stumbling onto this Christmas gem after watching “Best Week Ever” - I had to track it down and watch it for myself. Usually…

Supermodel + Pop Christmas Music = Disaster

Well, at least that was the conclusion that most of the Internet and television shows are portraying it as… While I wouldn’t call it the worst song ever (the vocals do leave some to desire) - this tune as been stuck in my head for the last week!!! So in my Christmas good cheer - I’m now going to share it with you as well!

Heidi Klum - Wonderland - (Song Sample)

And as an added bonus - the video for your viewing pleasure!

YouTube Preview Image

“Wonderland, wonderland, shining stars, jingle bells.”

You have to love those types of lyrics. Especially when the singing children start helping Heidi finish the song. I also found this fantastic blurb from AV Club that sums it up quite well…

This song and video are the aural and visual equivalent of eating candy canes dipped in maple syrup sprinkled with gumdrops that have somehow been made into a Yule log which is then served on the back of a sleigh driven by the jolliest snowman ever brought to life by the magical love and good wishes of two adorable children.

Diabetes indeed…
